Assigning an ISBN code

An ISBN code assignment is an essential part of the international infrastructure of the book industry and is essential for anyone who wants to sell or distribute books internationally. ISBN and barcode – every novice author encounters this incomprehensible abbreviation and dashes for the first time. As mysterious as it is, it’s pretty simple. ISBN is the “passport” of each book. The assignment of the ISBN code, of course, is performed by our publishing house as a separate service or as part of a package of services with book printing.

The ISBN barcode is a code that is definitely used to identify books. The code consists of a series of numbers and letters that are used to identify the book. This code is used by libraries and, for example, bookstores to keep track of the books they have in stock. The code is also used by publishers to keep track of the books they have published.

The ISBN code is assigned to a variety of publications, for example, books, e-books, audiobooks, textbooks, scientific journals, magazines, technical reports, dissertations, reference books, and government reports. By providing a unique identifier for each publication, the ISBN makes it easier for libraries, booksellers, and distributors to catalog, search, and track these publications.

Few details

The ISBN barcode was first introduced in 1974. The code was originally developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Since its inception, the code has been revised several times. The last revision of the code was published in 2006.

The ISBN barcode is used to identify books published in the United States. The code is also used to identify books published in other countries. The code is not used to identify books published in the UK.

The ISBN barcode consists of 10 digits. The first digit of the code is digit 9. The second digit of the code is digit 7. The third digit of the code is digit 8. The fourth digit of the code is digit 0. The fifth digit of the code is digit 1. The sixth digit of the code is digit 2. The seventh digit of the code is digit 5. The eighth digit of the code is the number 9. The ninth digit of the code is the number 9. The tenth digit of the code is the number 9.

The ISBN barcode is used to identify the language of the book. The first two digits of the code are used to identify the language of the book. For example:

English 00;

French 01;

German 02;

Italian 03;

Spanish 04;

Portuguese 05;

Dutch 06;

Swedish 07;

Danish 08;

Icelandic 11;

Greek 12;

Hebrew 13;

Arabic 14;

Japanese 15;

Chinese 16;

Korean 17;

Thai 18;

Vietnamese 19.

The third and fourth digits of the ISBN barcode are used to identify the country in which the book was published. For example:

United States 00;

Canada 01;

UK 02;

Ireland 03;

Australia 04;

New Zealand 05;

South Africa 06;

The fifth digit of the ISBN barcode is used to identify the book’s publisher.

The sixth digit of the ISBN barcode is used to identify the book.

The seventh digit of the ISBN barcode is used to identify the edition of the book.

The eighth digit of the ISBN barcode is used to identify the format of the book. For example:

  • Hardcover 0;
  • Paperback 1;
  • Audio 2;
  • E-book 3.

The ninth digit of the ISBN barcode is used to identify the book. The following table lists the codes for various books.

The tenth digit of the ISBN barcode is used to identify the check digit. The check digit is used to check the accuracy of the ISBN barcode.

Features of assigning an ISBN code

Of course, each person has an identity document (such as a birth certificate or passport). The same applies to multi-page literature. Books (and not only) need unique numbers. For example, for an electronic and paper version of the same book, you will need two registration codes. In addition, if there are several volumes, you will need to buy a special ISBN for a multi-volume edition.

ISBN is, first of all, an important stage. It is in this way that the publication enters the register of world literature. Subsequently, it is no longer possible to withdraw a book from this list after registration. Therefore, first of all, it is necessary to take care of the impeccability of what is written, since editing after registration will be impossible.

With the help of ISBN, it is easy to unify the process of publishing printed materials not only in our country, but throughout the world. Of course, this greatly simplifies the process of working with a variety of books.

An ISBN consists of four parts: country code, publisher code, title code, and check digit. The country code is always three characters long, followed by the publisher’s code, which is usually four or five characters long. The title code always consists of five characters. The check digit is a single character that is used to check the accuracy of the ISBN code.

  1. The first part is the country code. This code identifies the country in which the book was published. The country code always consists of three characters. For example, the country code for the United States is “USA”.
  2. The second part is the publisher’s code. This code identifies the publisher of the book. The publisher code is usually four or five characters long. For example, the Simon & Schuster publishing code is “0024”.
  3. The third part is the title code. This code defines the specific title of the book. The title code always consists of five characters. For example, the code for the title of the book “The Cat in the Hat” is “01001”.
  4. The fourth part is the check digit. This figure is used to check the accuracy of the ISBN code. The check digit is a single character that can be either a digit or a letter. For example, the check digit for the ISBN code “01001” is “0”.

Purchasing and Assigning an ISBN Code Today

As mentioned above, the ISBN Code is, of course, a unique code that is assigned to each book. It is primarily used to identify a book and allows booksellers and libraries to order the right title. Would you like to know how to get an ISBN? In this case, there are two options for resolving the issue.

  1. First, on your own. A very costly process that takes a lot of time, effort and money.
  2. Secondly, through the publisher. The most important advantage is getting the code in the shortest possible time.

First of all, we note that the Book Chamber of Ukraine is engaged in issuing the code in our country. Sells ISBNs and publishers that work directly with the book chamber. But, in addition to information about the publication itself, information about the author (authors) is required, as well as copies for distribution to the main libraries of Ukraine. They are provided by the customer himself or orders the printing of books from us.

There are three options for placing the code:

  • lower left corner of the title page (reverse side);
  • lower left side of combined title page;
  • cover or spine.

An ISBN code is assigned to each publication

First of all, the ISBN code makes it easy to find and track them in the global publishing industry. In addition, it is a mandatory requirement for all books. This applies to publications that are published and distributed on a commercial basis. Most importantly, the ISBN code is critical to the proper cataloging and distribution of books. In addition, the exact number of sales and distribution is important.

The ISBN code can certainly be assigned to a number of other publications as well. For example:

  1. Books. These include fiction, non-fiction, and children’s books. Naturally, both in print and in electronic format.
  2. Electronic books or e-books also have an ISBN code. This, above all, allows you to accurately track sales and distribution of e-books. Most importantly, by making it easier for readers to find and purchase e-books online.
  3. Audiobooks. Audiobooks, both CD and digital, are also assigned an ISBN. This allows you to accurately track sales and distribution of audiobooks, making it easier for listeners to find and purchase audiobooks.
  4. Textbooks. Textbooks, including textbooks for higher educational institutions. First of all, it is necessary that they can be easily found and traced in schools, libraries and for students.
  5. academic journals. Academic journals, including scientific journals, are also assigned an ISBN code. This naturally allows journal articles to be properly cataloged and tracked. First of all, by making it easier for researchers and scientists to find and access them.
  6. Magazines. Journals, including both print and digital publications, are also assigned an ISBN code. In addition to the above benefits, of course, the ease of subscribing to your favorite magazines is added.
  7. Technical reports on various technical and scientific topics commonly used by engineers, scientists and other professionals.
  8. Dissertations and theses. For example: graduate research projects, master’s and doctoral dissertations that are written as part of a degree program.
  9. Reference works: encyclopedias, dictionaries and other resources used as reference materials.
  10. government reports. Reports prepared by government agencies and departments that primarily cover a wide range of topics and provide valuable information for researchers and policy makers.

Assigning an ISBN code for e-books

ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a unique identifier for a book or other publication. The first ISBN was assigned in 1970, and since then over 200 million ISBNs have been assigned. ISBNs are used by publishers, booksellers, and libraries to order, catalog, and distribute books and other publications. They also allow researchers to identify and cite publications.

When a publisher assigns an ISBN to an electronic publication, it is first included in the file’s metadata. This allows the ISBN to be displayed when downloading or opening a file. In addition, it also allows automated systems to identify the file as a publication.

There are two types of ISBNs for electronic publications:

  1. Electronic ISBNs. These ISBNs are assigned to electronic publications available for purchase, such as e-books and downloadable PDFs.
    P-ISBN.
  2. These ISBNs are assigned to electronic publications that are available free of charge, such as websites and articles from open access journals.
  3. P-ISBNs were introduced in 2010 and E-ISBNs in 2011.

When an electronic publication is assigned an E-ISBN, the publisher may also include a price in the metadata. This price will be shown to the user when downloading or opening the file. If an electronic publication is updated after publication, the ISBN must be updated to reflect the new version. For example, if a second edition of an e-book is released, the ISBN must be updated to reflect the new edition.

It is important to note that an ISBN is not mandatory for electronic publications, but it can be very helpful in identifying and cataloging them.

ISBN for monograph

ISBNs are assigned not only to books, but also to monographs. For example, if you are an author, publisher, or self-publisher, you will definitely need to buy an ISBN. Assign it to your book to make it easily discoverable and, most importantly, trackable in the global publishing industry.

Of course, buying an ISBN is very easy. This can be done, for example, through various online sources or through ISBN agencies in different countries. The price of an ISBN can, of course, vary depending on the seller and the number of codes you purchase. In our publishing house, of course, there are discounts on the service for regular and wholesale customers.

The assignment of an ISBN to a monograph is certainly an important step in the publishing process. First of all, it ensures that your book is properly catalogued. In addition, it will be easily found by libraries, booksellers and distributors. It also allows you to accurately track sales and distribution. For marketing and promotion of the book, this is certainly an important component.

As you can see, acquiring an ISBN and assigning it to your monograph is an essential aspect of publishing. Naturally, it is very important to take the necessary steps to obtain it and use it correctly. The price of an ISBN, of course, may seem high. But, it’s a small investment for the benefits it provides. For example: increasing visibility and making your book easier to track in the global marketplace.

Is it necessary to have an ISBN?

The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a unique digital identifier for a commercial book. Publishers purchase ISBNs from an affiliate of the International ISBN Agency. An ISBN is assigned to each edition and variety of a book (except reissues). For example, an e-book, paperback edition, and hardcover edition of the same book will all have different ISBNs. The ISBN consists of 13 digits if assigned on or after January 1, 2007, and 10 digits if assigned before 2007. The method of assigning an ISBN is country specific and varies between countries, often depending on how large the country’s publishing industry is.

The original nine-digit ISBN configuration (1-9) was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and published in 1970 as the international standard ISO 2108 (ISO Commercial Book Identifier). The 10-digit ISBN format was developed by the International ISBN Agency in 1977 and published as the international standard ISO 2103.

Publishers intending to distribute their books internationally are assigned ISBN-13 as the new standard provides for a single identifier for all countries. Books published before 2007 that have a 10 digit ISBN can be converted to 13 digits by prefixing the ISBN with “979”.

The ISBN is used to identify and standardize a publication and its corresponding edition worldwide and is therefore a critical component in the international supply chain of the book industry. An ISBN allows publishers to track their inventory and provides some level of counterfeit protection.

When a book is assigned an ISBN, it is entered into the ISBN database, along with the book’s title, publisher, and other relevant information. The ISBN agency then issues a barcode corresponding to the ISBN, which is used to track the inventory of the book as it moves through the supply chain.

The code is first assigned to:

  • printed non-periodicals;
  • electronic publications;
  • software products.

But if we are talking about a gift edition or a book in a single copy that will not be sold, then you should not think about buying ISBN.

Which publications do not need an ISBN?

The ISBN (International Standard Book Number) code is assigned primarily to published works intended for commercial distribution. However, not all books and publications require an ISBN code. Some types of books that do not require an ISBN code include:

  1. Self-published books. For example, if you’re self-publishing a book without a traditional publisher, you don’t need an ISBN. However, obtaining an ISBN code can make it easier to sell your book. For example, when you plan to distribute it through bookstores or online stores.
  2. Books printed on demand (POD). If you are using a print-on-demand service to produce your book, you may not need an ISBN. For example, some print-on-demand services provide ISBNs for a fee. Of course, this is not a requirement for all printed-on-demand books.
  3. Distribution. If you plan to give away your book as a gift or, for example, as part of a promotion. Of course, such books are not usually sold and do not need identification provided by the ISBN code.
  4. Personal documents. For example, personal letters, diaries and other documents not intended for commercial distribution.
  5. Internal reports. Reports prepared by companies and organizations for internal use only and, of course, not intended for commercial distribution.
  6. Newsletters produced by companies, organizations and individuals. First of all, they are distributed within a certain community or group.
  7. Marketing materials: Brochures, flyers and other promotional materials produced by companies and organizations to promote their products or services.
  8. Unpublished Works: Manuscripts and drafts that have not been published. Certainly not intended for commercial distribution.
  9. One of a kind items. Unique items such as art reproductions, photographs and other works of art not intended for commercial distribution.
  10. These types of documents are not usually cataloged by libraries or sold by bookstores, so they do not need a unique identifier provided by the ISBN code.

Prices for the purchase of ISBN

ISBNs are unique book identifiers used by publishers, booksellers, libraries, and others in the book industry. The ISBN system was developed in the 1960s and is operated by an international organization, the International ISBN Agency.

The cost of an ISBN depends on the country in which it is purchased, as well as the number of digits in the ISBN. In the US, an ISBN consists of 10 digits, and its value ranges from $10 to $50. In other countries, the ISBN may be 13 digits long and the cost may be much higher. The price of an ISBN also depends on whether it is purchased for a new or used book. New ISBNs usually cost more than used ones. In Ukraine, the price also fluctuates depending on the organizations that offer this service.

An ISBN is not required for books that are self-published or published by very small publishers. However, an ISBN can make it easier for booksellers to store and sell your book, and can also be used to track sales and royalties.

  • If you self-publish a book, you can purchase the ISBN yourself or use a service that will provide you with an ISBN for a fee.
  • When you are published by a small publisher, you can get an ISBN for free or at a reduced price.
  • If you are publishing with a major publisher, the ISBN will be included in your publishing contract.

An ISBN is no guarantee of success, but it can be a useful tool in marketing and selling your book.
