Publishing and printing monographs

A monograph is a work by a scholar in which a single research topic is studied, summarised and described, and in which the results obtained are set out and published. Monographs play a very important role in the social sciences and the humanities, whereas in the natural sciences the emphasis is on publication in scientific journals. Publishing a monograph

The ability to present your work has long been extremely important. Monographs come in different forms: collective ones, written by several scholars together, and single-author ones, written individually.

How we work

The publication of a scholarly work is an important event in the life of every researcher. Preparing a monograph for printing, however, takes time away from research and can become a real headache for the author. This is exactly what the Kavun publishing house helps with. We work both with first-time authors and with experienced ones, and we can produce a single copy or a large print run.

A monograph has the usual structural elements:

1. the title;
2. information about the author;
3. a preface and an introduction;
4. the main part, divided into sections, chapters or paragraphs;
5. the conclusions;
6. a list of the sources used, in the appendix.

To place an order the author has to provide:

• the text of the manuscript;
• all graphic and photographic materials;
• a detailed description of the requirements for the layout and design.

Ways of printing a monograph

A scientific monograph can be printed in several ways.

1. Offset printing. It is used above all for large numbers of copies. This method allows printing on offset and coated paper, in colour or in black and white. The technology also makes it possible to produce printed matter in one or two spot colours, so that the text can be, for example, dark blue instead of black. A cover printed this way is in no way inferior to a full-colour version and can even look better.
2. Digital printing. It is used for editions with a run of up to 100 copies. This method allows printing on 80 g/m2 offset paper and on coated paper, in colour and in black and white.
3. Risograph printing. It produces books in the intermediate range between offset and digital runs. Only offset paper is suitable. The quality of a risograph is good enough for text but not for graphic elements and images, and the printing is mostly monochrome.

The type of cover has a major influence on the cost of the edition. For simple works we offer covers printed in one or two colours and a soft cover; medium-weight paper is used and lamination is optional. Full-colour printing and a hard cover cost more.

Assignment of codes and the author’s mark

Publishing a scientific monograph includes the assignment of an ISBN, a UDC and a BBK index and an author’s mark.

What are they for? The edition has to be registered with the Book Chamber of Ukraine. The ISBN is a 13-digit number with a barcode that identifies an edition and its publisher.

Terms and timescales for publishing a monograph

Collective monographs are usually produced in A4 format, but the customer can order any format required. The more the materials have to be reworked into the required form, the longer the job will take.
