What does ISBN stand for?
The ISBN code on books and other multi-page literature (for example, magazines, abstracts, teaching aids, etc.) is incomprehensible to many and, of course, remains a mystery. To clarify, in fact, all the prescribed numbers, of course, have their purpose. We will tell you what an ISBN means, how to get it and, above all, whether you need one.
Concept and designation
Of course, we will consider the question of the concept and designation of the code, what it is used for and, in addition, what function it performs.
ISBN or ISBN is the international number of a paper or, for example, an electronic book. Most importantly, you can find it on the back of the publication, in other words, on the substrate. In Ukraine, the registration and issuance of ISBNs is carried out by the Ukrainian Book Chamber. Of course, you can save the time of registration by asking for help from printing houses that directly cooperate with the Book Chamber without intermediaries. Explanation: "What does ISBN stand for?"
Modern ISBN is a thirteen-digit individual code with a barcode. The numbers, most importantly, are indicated in a certain sequence and are divided into 5 main groups.
- Prefix (three digits).
- Sequence number of registration (country, region and language of the printed edition). Consists of 1-5 digits.
- Publisher identification (publisher code) – 7 numbers.
- The serial number of the book in the publishing house is up to 6 digits.

Is it possible to do without ISBN?
Many, of course, may have a question: “Is it always necessary to register your book and receive a code?”. Literature without an ISBN is often referred to, for example, as “non-format” and compared to brochures printed at home on a printer. If you need a gift copy or for personal use, it is not worth learning what ISBN means and where to get it. Even if the publication does not come in a single copy, but with a small circulation, it will not go on sale, but will be kept as a souvenir or gift.
How to get an ISBN?
The book must pass the mandatory registration procedure in the Book Chamber of Ukraine.
