Why do I need an ISBN?
The ISBN is a unique number that is entered to automate its handling and subsequent implementation in retail chains.
Not quite sure why the ISBN is needed? We will give a detailed answer to this question. The ISBN code is the passport of the edition, be it a book or a brochure. It was invented to make it easier to orient in the world book production.
A book without an ISBN is not a book, but a samizdat, which you can print out on your home printer. If you look at things from a practical point of view, though, it’s about:
- accounting;
- control;
- retrieval;
- selling.
If that’s not enough for you, there are a few more answers to the question, “Why do I need an ISBN (book number)?
- To confirm the uniqueness of the publication and to secure the copyright.
- To get the book into the largest libraries and international systems of accounting.
- Registration of the electronic version in the base of the Ukrainian State Library.
- Open access to information about the publication.
It is not necessary to buy an ISBN code for your edition, but in this case no store will be able to take it for sale. The same applies to libraries, for which the existence of an index is mandatory.
